International Women’s Day 2013 & Launch of NCCWN Women’s Collective Southeast

On International Women’s Day, ACCESS 2000 together with Waterford Women’s Centre celebrates the launch of the Women’s Collective of the South East, and the regional launch of the National Collective of Community Based Women’s Networks (NCCWN).

The collaboration of the two projects began in 1995. Marian Donegan, Project Co-ordinator of ACCESS 2000  said ‘The development of the Women’s Collective of the South East is a welcome opportunity to strengthen this relationship. South East regional representative Ann Fitzgerald,  said ‘This is a wonderful opportunity for local community women’s groups to build a strong local, regional and national voice for disadvantaged women.

This is the first time that ordinary women have  a national organisation that is truly representative of grassroots women’s projects; from Waterford to Wexford to Dublin to Donegal.  Ms. Donegan said  ‘In supporting the development of the regions the National Collective of Community Based Women’s Networks is making it possible for women experiencing disadvantage to represent themselves and their own issues at national level.

Miriam Holt, Coordinator of the NCCWN, said  ‘In becoming a Women’s National Development Company the NCCWN has enabled women’s projects all over Ireland to form a collective through which they can be democratically represented at a regional and national level’.  International Women Day is a time to reflect on the gains made for women and we see the development of the South East Women’s Collective and being part of a National Collective is a tremendous achievement in 2013.’
