Refashion – Sustainable Sewing and Fashion Upcycling Course
October 4 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm ISTFree
Come join us as we explore the art of recycling old clothing into newly fashionable pieces. You will learn how to sustainably shop and select materials, and save money while creating a more ethical lifestyle. This 20-week program is great for anyone who wants to be a part of the Solution Revolution.
Whether your wardrobe is full of brand-new items or decades-old favorites, the learners involved in this program will discover a unique way of recycling previously un-wearable items or old clothing, creating a more sustainable way of shopping. Since Sustainable Fashion is the future of retail, our future depends on us to be smarter with our textile waste. With over 63000 tonnes of clothing landing in our landfills every year (Ireland alone), not only is this class fun but a necessity, worldwide.
This course will cover a few different areas of upcycling, and feature a number of demonstrations by our expert instructor.
The introduction will focus on how to search for textiles, fabric, and clothes to upcycle and repurpose suitable for your re-fashion project. You will learn how to use hand sewing, embroidery, beading, fabric painting, and dyeing techniques, to transform old clothes and textiles into something new. From there we start with restyling alterations and embroidery which is a great way to revamp a garment that may have seen better days. We also teach you how to make your own appliques from existing items or fabrics and how to make a custom piece of jewellery to finish up your outfit. In the final chapter, we teach you how to use a sewing machine, overlocker machine, or embroidery machine through demonstration and practice while making our own fashionable project so you can take all these skills home thinking about how you could use them in other projects and once completed.
We will hold a fashion show in which you can showcase your creations to our community
